For the third time in his career, and second consecutive season,
Eric Weddle
is heading to the Pro Bowl.
The
NFL announced Tuesday that the world class safety will represent the
Chargers during the annual all-star exhibition that this year will be
held in Arizona.
While Weddle was the only Bolt to be named to
the Pro Bowl, three others were recognized with high honors as
alternates including
Antonio Gates
(1
st),
Darrell Stuckey
(1
st) and
Philip Rivers
(2
nd).
Should any of the players selected ahead of Gates and Stuckey be unable
to play, they would be the next man in. Meanwhile, Rivers would step
in should any pair of quarterbacks have to withdraw.
Weddle is
clearly deserving of the honor, as according to the coaches stats, he
leads the defense with 105 total tackles and 84 solo stops. He’s also
tied for the team lead with two forced fumbles and ranks third with
eight passes defensed. While the safety has only one interception this
season, it sealed the Bolts’ victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. His
game changing ability was on full display Saturday night when his
forced fumble in overtime allowed the Chargers to pull off their
greatest comeback in franchise history.
Equally important to
Weddle’s play on the field is his intelligence and football IQ.
Referred to by many as the quarterback of the defense, he often aligns
the defense and puts his teammates in the best position to succeed with
his presnap reads and adjustments. In addition to his on field
accomplishments, Weddle is a true leader off of it serving as a
perennial team captain.
“Eric means everything to us,”
Shareece Wright
once said. “He’s our quarterback. He’s our Philip Rivers of the
defense. He’s very important. It feels good knowing he’s back there.
It’s a comfort that it allows us to have knowing he’s there. I know
he’s back there and he’s got my back and he’s going to make sure he
gives me the alerts I need to be at the top of my game. He wants to be
great. He wants to be the best and he carries himself like that every
single day.”
Weddle, and possibly others, will take the field on
Jan. 25 at University of Phoenix Stadium for the Pro Bowl. But right
now, the Bolts focus is on taking care of business this Sunday against
the Kansas City Chiefs as a win guarantees them a spot in the
postseason.
